Default Cast iron sediment bowl leaks sporadically from the bottom center screw

I have a cast iron sediment bowl on my '28. I bought it "refurbished" from a member here.

It has the correct lead washer, etc.

First time gas went through it, it leaked from the filtering screw (not sure what it's called) from the bottom, but stopped after tightening it.

Hasn't been an issue until yesterday. After driving, I noticed a wet spot under it and it leaked again. Checked screw and it was tight.

Drove for approx. 60 miles and it stopped. If I run my finger under the the four prongs, it feels like it is weeping ever so slightly.

Thoughts on what could be wrong and how to fix it?

Thanks,

Tim

Hairline crack in bowl?....that is the problem with the 3 I have. Would love to have used one for the 'uniqueness' and originality, but bought a glass bowl version instead.

The bottom threaded part is actually part of a valve, it's the tapered plug part and the tapered seat is in the part it screws into. I don't know all the proper names for those parts.
You may have to lap the plug into the seat w/fine lapping compound.

Ah, good idea. I have Time Saver lapping powder. I'll try that.

I think Bratton's, Snyder's and probably others sell the drain valve and the seat for the cast iron sediment bulb if lapping doesn't solve your problem.

That's good to know, thanks.

Just checked Snyders and they are out of stock. Will try others to see if they have it. I need a few other odds and ends anyway.
