Default Cool older restoration of grandma's woodie convertible

Haven't seen one this cheap before.

Another cool 41 woodie at a cheap price from an estate. This is what happens when you die with old cars in the garage and what happens when you leave your woodie in the rain.

Gee, remember when they were going for $100K?

Shows how times change. 50's cars are next.

This one not tempting to me at any price. I don't want grandma's old car. They did get rid of the old flathead and fluid drive however.

Tex, I think at $40K someone is getting a great deal on grandmas car. The '41 is another story however. I took a good look at that car and wouldn't be surprised if it required a total re-wood, lots of "punky" wood.

I think grandmas car is a deal. The 41, not so much too, doors are flakey.

It's a "deal" because it's not an original Town & Country; it appears that someone applied the wood to a Chrysler convert.

I’d be planning to spend big money on either car, especially the Town & Country. From the looks of the underside and engine, I would be concerned with what is covered up. Looks like a car made to rent to movie studios.

It has faux wood plastic laminations, non-original engine, needs body off cleanup. I'd put it now higher than $30k as a decent 50 ft driver but too much money for a project car. Nice but the present owner knows where the price tag belongs.

Engine replacement is an improvement IMHO. Fluid drive is not my first choice. The woodie crowd doesn't devalue for non original engine. What do you think is not real wood?

It may be real wood, but there are a few problems: An original would have all ash structural wood; I'm pretty sure I see some oak in the mix.
All those wooden buttons show that the wood was fastened from the outside; there are no visible fasteners on an original.
You can see the tops of the metal doors above the added wood.
The hardwood framework on an orig. trunk lid has very complex laminations not seen on this car, not to mention the absence of heavy, chromed external hinges.
Google "1948 Town & Country Convertible" images to see these (and more) discrepancies.

Thanks. I know nothing about this car or any Town and Country. Not a mopar guy. Just looked nice to me. I've seen the same thing done to a 46/48 Ford convertible.

Yes, definitely not a real Town and Country. On the real deal, the wood framing of the doors is flush with the rest of the body lines, while on this one it sticks out about an inch, showing that it was clearly just screwed on over the existing metal skin. See here for an example: https://hymanltd.com/vehicles/5490-1...y-convertible/

In the narrative of the ad, he hints at the truth, saying "born a Windsor," but he really should have made it explicit. The title of the listing, "1948 Chrysler Town & Country Convertible" is outright fraud, without adding the word "Tribute", "Replica" or something similar.

Yes, too many of those buttons. In the front quarter view you can see that the door overlay is about 1" thick and starts maybe 2" back from the front edge of the original steel door. This is most likely so it will open. Yes, 'tribute' should be mentioned in the text, but I will say it still was not an easy task to cover those curves with oak and veneer.

Someone spent some big $$ on wood for the fake.

Here are the hinges you are talking about:

vs the fake no outside hinges and wooden buttons:
