Walt? Ol' Ron? I would ask my Pops, but he is tuning flatties in heaven, now.

I've searched sleeves all over, but all I got was one guy saying he tried to loosen his by welding a bead lengthwise; then he discovered that his cylinder wasn't sleeved. OOPS!

Wiley,The sleeve that Ford inatalled in
40-42 were steel.[about .040 wall thickeness]were finished ont the inside and were on size.The other sleeves most commonly used were high quality cast iron finished to size on the outside.The block was bore to a slight interference fit,the sleeves were installd and the sleeve was the bored and honed to size.Phil

Trainguy is correct. You can peel those .040 steel sleeves out.Start on the bottom with something like a long small dia screw driver with a rugged handle that you can pound on, sharpen the screw driver like a chisel, drive the chisel down between the sleeve and the cyl. wall, it will peel a piece about 1/4in. wide the length of the sleeve, then the sleeve will come right out. I then bore the cly out another .045 to 3-3/16 and use std. 8BA pistons. With the 40 Ford heads it really puts the pep right into those little engines. Walt

There are also "tin "sleeves with a thicker wall--about .060--finished honed inside, case hardened

I'm using the 81A heads milled for .04" piston clearance on the 8BA test engine to raise the CR to around 7.5.
