Default Garage Door Height

I'm adding a new garage door to my shop to permit me to service cars I have now and possible future aqusitions. What is the highest Model A oor AA? A mail truck appeals for the future, how high are they? Is anything else higher?
Thanks

If it were me I'd put the tallest door that will fit but a minimum of 8 feet. I put 8 foot doors on my 10 foot tall ceiling garage.

the bigger the better you only do it once...
plus larger will give you more air flow

When I built my house in the Seattle area 25 years ago, the garage had 11 ft ceilings, big enough for a motor home if so desired. Would also accommodate a car on a lift.

I really miss that garage!

I'd say Rock Hill Will's Panel Delivery would be one of the taller Model A's you would run into, that plus with the tail light mounted up high on that car.

How tall? Don't know but I'm sure a seven foot high door wouldn't cut it........................

I just put in. A commercial door which is 12 feet wide and 10 feet high. I will likely never need it but. For the price difference I thought it was wise. A day later my son asked if he could use the barn to work on his boat. It was nine feet tall, so you never know ! Wayne

Hi Alfin,
One never knows what the future holds. Since you have the opportunity, I, like others here, suggest you put in a higher door.
You might build or own a motor home one day, build an earoplane or miss a sale because the buyer wants or needs a high door garage for some or other reason.

I have a US Mail truck on the passenger chassis. My garage doors are 7 1/2 feet. The Mail Truck just barely makes it with perhaps an inch or two to spare. Go for 8 foot doors as a minimum.

I agree with Mitch, my shop door is 12' wide x 13'-6" tall. It's amazing how many times that big door has come in handy.

I measured my AA mail truck and it is right a 8 1/2 feet.
My shop has 10ft doors.

Thanks for the measurements, guys. I can just make 8 1/2 ft without redoing the framing.

My only regret in building my shop garage is that I didn't put a door on each opposing end. It would have been so much better to drive through and drop something off rather than backing it in.
And, if you have a car up on jacks for a while, the other door gives access to bring a second car in.

Most motorhomes are over 12 feet tall. My 32 foot Newmar is 12' 6". Don't forget the clearance for the door when the car is up in the air. I have a Kwik Lift that is only 20" rise, but in my in normal 20x20 condo garage, my 29 coupe clears the open door by only a 1/2".

I also put 8 ft tall doors in my collision repair shop with a 10 ft ceiling, just make sure they open all the way up to leave an 8 ft opening. Before having new doors installed this year I had 8 ft swing out doors and was able to put a single axle dump truck in the shop. I actually like swing out doors better but since I am now retired I had the new over head doors installed. I do like them but swing out doors don't block the lights from the ceiling.

Roll ups are another option
They do not block the light or interfere with a car on the lift
