need GM alt part number for 12v conversion

looking for a GM alternator part number- single wire, 100 amp?
seems like these are what everyone is using, when switching over to 12 volts
thanks for any info or ideas

my first susgestion is forget about the one wire alt, they can be tempramental, wont start charging till the engine rpm reaches around 1000 rpm when the engine is first started, and they have a habit of draining the battery over night, i would use a chevy 3 wire alt, only one wire more is needed to work, the exra wire needs to be hooked to a switched hot wire from the ignition, on when the key is on off when the key is off, and they are cheaper and can be bought at any parts store, if you dont know how to wire the 3 wire alt let me know and i will tell you how its done

I agree with Ford1 A 10si or a 12 si gm alternator with an internal regulator in the 3 wire configuration is the way to go. They are cheaper and simple to hook up and all you need is a diode or a light bulb to excite the regulator. They work at idle speed too.

In July of 2005 I installed a G M one wire alternator in my 55 f100 with a flathead in it .Maximum output under full load is 74 amps.I haven't had a bit of trouble with it.Vehicle sits all winter and I start it two or three times during the winter.Battery has never went dead and it is stored in an unheated garage.I wouldn't hesitate to install another one if the need ever arises .

I agree with joe plumber, I have one wire in both of mine with no complaints. The one in my 46 has been in service for probably 4 years with no problems. It is from Haywire, the one in my 53 is a Powermaster.

Never had a problem with my one wire, didnt even need a part number, walked over to the auto parts store and said I need a one wire GM alternator, parts guy comes back and gives me a box. I think its off a late 60's, early 70 GM car.

What amazes me is these one wire alternators never gave any problems when they were installed in GM vehicles?

There are quite a few threads on the HAMB discussing this subject. It seems to me that most feel that the 3 wire is the way to go; which is what I've always liked. I did install a single wire on my daughters truck a couple of years ago, and seem to work fine.

It kind of seems like a Ford or Chev thing, which one do you like?

Glad to hear they got you fixed up.I live a little over an hour from Speedway.If I need anything right away,I take a road trip,if not I give them a call and usually have it the next day.If you ever get to Lincoln ,Nebraska stop in and see the place ,nice people.Make sure you see the museum.There is stuff in there i didn't know existed.

Before you buy an alternator, you might want to learn more about the differences and advantages of the 3 wire 10SI/12SI GM units. To my knowledge, GM never used one-wire 10/12 SI alternators on production vehicles. The one-wires were intended for limited uses with basic wiring (and knowledge) such as stationary and industrial applications, and their ONLY advantage is simple hookup. The 10/12SI series is a very well designed alternator and will work with a one wire hookup, but will perform better and as designed by using the factory 3 wire install. The key issue is voltage drop/loss, something many don't understand. Open the link below, click on Electrical Tech, take a few minutes and learn the facts before you make a decision. Mark Hamilton has provided a wealth of info on the subject.
