Re: grinds in all gears
No, if you install the clutch backwards, you will not be able to shift into any gears.
I recently spoke to the guy who owns the car, he changed the entire transmission & bell housing and it still had the same problem. We then found that the only thing left was the clutch pedal, so we removed it and IT WAS DIFFERENT SHAPE THEN THE ONE I HAD IN STOCK. We are not sure what the pedal is off of maybe AA?? after we swapped the clutch pedal everything was fine. mike |

Re: grinds in all gears
Mike. Good result;did the replacement pedal have more throw? Was there a significant difference in shape?

Yes the replacement clutch pedal has more throw. The pedal looks the same but when I matched the 2 next to each other they were slightly different around the bushing area. Also in the area mid span where the pedal would touch the rear engine mount.

Re: grinds in all gears
I'll agree with Bob C on this one. If the 'owner' just installed the engine and did not replace the T.O. bearing or check runout on anything that may be the issue.
If there is a new clutch friction disk, I've seen them with enough fore/aft warp and wobble to cause some drag with the clutch pressure plate fully released. Never assume that just because a friction disk is new the spring mounted spline collar in the center is exactly 90 degrees to the plane of the plate. It's always a good idea to place a new clutch disk loose on a tranny input spline and spin it to see if it runs true before sandwiching it between the flywheel and pressure plate. |

Re: grinds in all gears
Is the Grinding only while you are downshifting? I have never been able to downshift into first while the car is rolling. And I have found that downshifting into second only while you are rolling less that 15 MPH.
