Interchange? for 1957 3 speed>to full synchromesh?
Standard shift 3 speed with out first gear synchromesh*,can it be replaced EZ?
=with out needing= new drive shaft/bell housing/new rear cross member n mount?? With a full synch. 3 ??from? n #. Or is it a big deal?no matter what? Tran. in car is 27.5 in long to end of tailshaft, with Tran mount at 13in center from bell housing. I don't want a 4speed,or auto. Wondering if some did it? With out it being a PITA. |

Re: Interchange? for 1957 3 speed>to full synchromesh?
Ford didn't synchronize 1st until mid-year 1963. If memory serves, they called it a 3 1/2 speed transmission. If you can find one of those transmissions you could probably adapt it without much trouble but I don't know what would be involved. If it were me I'd just stick (pun intended) with the original trans. Assuming you still run the original Y-block, or a reasonable facsimile thereof, you have plenty of low end grunt and and shouldn't need low except from a standing start. You can grab 1st while just barely moving (less than 1 mph), all you'll get is a gentle grind.

I like my y-block 292 v8 just find, even put up with the tranny OK,but have thought about trying for a synchro first a number of times.

Re: Interchange? for 1957 3 speed>to full synchromesh?
i done this on a 57 many years ago.in 65 they changed their bolt pattern but the old holes are still there.im not sure about the 63 64 one but the later are 3 inches shorter.thats the biggest thing.if you use one from a small block 260 351 you need the grind 3/8 of the imput shaft.just small things.

Many (but not all) of the post '64 full synco 3 speeds were drilled with both the wide and the earlier narrow pattern.

Re: Interchange? for 1957 3 speed>to full synchromesh?
The easiest way around this is for the driver to learn how to double clutch in to first gear. Find an empty flat parking lot with few obstacles, and cruise around for a minute in first at idle RPM. Watch how fast the ground goes past out of your peripheral vision. Accelerate to second, then brake like to a stop, and at the magic speed, let the clutch out as you pass neutral on your way into first. With practice, it will be silent and become second nature.

Re: Interchange? for 1957 3 speed>to full synchromesh?
I've got a 3 speed toploader from a '69 Galaxie in my '59.
The trans is 27.5" long, has a 28 spline output, and 10 spline 1-1/16" input. Has both narrow and wide bolt pattern. I believe you would just need to get a new clutch to be 10 spline. It may be up for sale....as I'm putting in a 4 speed which has overdrive. |

Have you tried shifting to 2nd before 1st to eliminate grinding?
