Default Hood Shelf Blocks

The Hood Shelf Blocks are for a 1928-29 Hoodlatch. But how do they have to be installed? Does anybody know? Have you got a picture?

The third hole is for a short wood screw to hold the wood block and latch in place to the shelf pre assembly.

The other 2 holes are for screws with nuts .

Took me a bit to figure why there was 3 holes in latch , but only 2 in chassis for each one.

A little trick I did was to glue the one nut that didn't go through the frame to the wood block. (Epoxy) This way if I needed to remove the latch in the future I didn't need to remove the shelf.

Interesting.

I googled hood latches and saw kits with 2 long and 1 short metal threaded screw for each latch all with nuts.

The remains I found of an intact and probably original wood block had one short wood screw only, no nut.

We in OZ did not get your metal subframe, Ours are all wood .

I wonder if we made our own wooden blocks here and used these wood screws instead of nutted screws ?

After all, the third hole was only to hold the latch and wood block to the shelf, so the assembler on the assembly line could place the whole package onto to the chassis without fiddling to line up holes.

My painter convinced me to make my own blocks in order to have them just a slight bit taller to keep the outside metal edge of the shelves from digging into the fender and damaging the paint prematurely.

I am pretty sure that was how Ford had them from the factory.

Slightly thicker to stop metal to metal paint chipping.

The very early 28's are different, only the front block and latch cab be re-assembled as the back latch uses 3 long bolts, lock washers, and square nuts to mount the latch; also the bracket on the frame has 3 holes instead of two and there are 3 large holes in the running board shields that line up with the bracket; another unique feature is the bumper bracket at the center of the hood sill does not have a "L" bracket like the later hood sills, also the cut out at the rear of the hood sill is shorter to match the cowl which does not have the extended cowl.

Just thought you might like to know there are differences in hood sills and mounting.

I’d send you a picture of mine on my ’29, but I currently have the side panels off the hood so it wouldn’t help. I found that my hood was hard to fasten down so I just shimmed beneath the latches to put them a little bit higher. That meant less pulling up to fasten the hood. It worked and looks good.

Incredible...... You have the same problem as I have, I, with the help of members of FORDBARN, now understand the place of the Hood Shelf Blocks and have come to the same conclusion. Thank to all contributors to this Thread!

Pooch,
Are you referring to Russ's third picture? Yes, the welting is correct for 28/29 A's.

Synchro, what you are seeing is an oil pressure sender that is part of the temperature/pressure dual gauge that I bought from Snyders.

OK, thanks. It looks nothing like the sender on mine.
