Speedo cable fit
I am replacing the speedo cable in my '29 Fordor. I can not get the cable housing to thread more than 1/2 turn into the speedo, and when I tighten it by hand the inner cable binds up and won't turn. I have tried two different inner and outer cables and both have the same problem. It appears that the shoulder on the inner cable and corresponding ledge in the outer housing prevent the outer housing from seating far enough into the speedo.
Am I missing something? It should be simple. There is a fiber washer on the inner cable between the shoulder on the inner cable and the ledge in the housing. Is this original? It appears to be part of the problem. |

Re: Speedo cable fit
I have never seen one that was an original take off with a washer in place...

Re: Speedo cable fit
Is a part of broken cable inside the speedometer pocket for the cable?

Re: Speedo cable fit
I have a recently purchased repop cable and it was making a lot of noise until I backed off the nut at the speedo.
It seems on my 1931, that the repo cable inside drive was too long for the set up. I intend to grind it shorter with a dremel one of these days. Your problem may be similar. |

Re: Speedo cable fit
I think I solved the problem. I cut off the fiber washer to allow the outer cable housing to seat in the speedo. I suspect that washer was not supposed to be there, probably used for some other application.
Put it together and took a test drive, seems to be working fine. |
