Default Spark advance hi compression head

If the spark lever is in the down position, is that 0 degree and all the way up 40 degrees, or the other way around.
I have a new Snyder's 6.1 head installed and my directions say to run at 28 degrees. So is that a little past center toward retard or a little past center toward advance? Thanks

0 is up
You may find that you may not have to go past center or even stay before center..
You can find your exact 28 deg using an adjustable timing light

Pick a speed, bring the car up to that speed and start to slowly lower the lever. You will notice the engine picking up speed . At some point the engine will no longer speed up. raise the lever one notch. This is the "best" advance for that speed.

I do it as Mike V stated and it works well having the engine tell you where it is happiest. Its interesting on a highway to be doing 55 and then raising OR lowering the spark lever and see it jump to 57 or 58 mph. I keep track of mine how that sweet spot falls into the pin stripe on my dash, but I still play with it when driving and bored on the highway.
