Cleaning top of Block
Now that I have my engine torn all the way down. What is the best way to clean the carbon buildup from the top of the block and intake/exhaust ports without doing damage to the babbitt mains. Also what is the best way to remove the paint from the block without damage to babbitt mains

Re: Cleaning top of Block
Hot preasure wash the block, let it sit and do it again. i had a john deere A powerlift, grandpa and i degreased it in gas and then i took it out in 20 degree weather and hot power washed it, most the paint came off, what did't i hit with a wire brush, then sprayed it down with brake cleaner and mixed up some paint and painted it
Worked great! |

Re: Cleaning top of Block
Just get one of the heavy gel type paint strippers from Home Depot or such. Do small areas each time and you shouldn't have any problems keeping it off of your babbit. Even if you did get some on you babbit for a short time it probably wouldn't do any harm.
Sometimes for me the simplist way to get carbon etc.. off is to use a good stiff putty knife. Use your bench grinder to keep the putty knife sharp. I like to sharpen one of the sides of the putty knife too and use it to scape the insides of holes and passage ways.

Re: Cleaning top of Block
I use a putty knife to remove carbon. If you have time, oil should soften the carbon.
I went to a model train swap meet yesterday and bought a Marx engine that someone had globbed on some flat black and silver paint. I removed the motor unit and used gas to remove the silver, then today I used laquer thinner to remove the ugly black. You could try laquer thinner on you block and should have good results. If you have rust then you'll need to scrub it with a wire brush, or try some type of liquid rust remover. I tried naval jelly once but didn't have any luck with it. Maybe it was too old. I don't know if it has a shelf life. |

I scrape it off with a putty knife, then use a Roloc disk
