You could change your engine and transmission every time they got a little dirty. Or whenever the oil need changing.

Wow! That certainly does tell the "rest of the story". A HUGE financial cut directly into the corporate ROA, or return on assets! Megalomaniac Henry wouldn't have had it any other way at that point in time. Had it not changed the company would have not survived.

Fortunately Edsel and hired corporate management, combined with lessons learned during the war years, would come to see the light.

A large manufacturer couldn't survive today without a JIS (just in sequence) inventory system that feeds into a JIT (T = time) assembly line. Today's automakers sometimes refer to it as ILVS or 'in line vehicle sequencing'. Any buffer of excess parts is a negative on the bottom line.

Just a comment about JIT. I'm in the transportation business and JIT started to get popular in the early 80's.

It made a lot of sense not to warehouse parts when interest rates were 17%!

When it started, the distances from the parts manufacturer and the plant were much less. Across town in a lot of instances.

But now, with little or no interest to consider, the shipping distances are from across the nation to across the ocean.

In the 80's the auto companies paid when plants were late or weather delayed shipments. Now, they expect a trucking company to guarantee service. Companies that make $200 on a truckload of goods are expected to pay $30,000 to air part of the shipment if it's delayed. All that has to get rolled back into the cost of transportation, so we all ultimately pay more.

It should make sense to keep a couple of days inventory in hand, but now it's a couple of hours. So the plant shuts down and labor costs skyrocket.

For every grand idea like JIT, there is a corolary.

i always tell myself that i'll put a trans on the shelf and an axle under the bench, but end up puting it in the next project and never replenishing

For those that study Ford assembly line procedures, please answer the question below. Also answer why it was done that way.

I saw that in a assembly line movie a few weeks back, as the engines with transmissions were turned up the right way the trans top was attached but no shift lever, maybe a temporary top until further down the line?.
