Changing distributor points
At what mileage do you recommend changing the ignition points?
I use the stock set up and have had good luck with Echlin CS30. I know there is a wide range of quality. Also, how about the burn out proof condenser? Leave it in there? THANK YOU! |

Re: Changing distributor points
Change the points when they don't work any longer after careful adjustments fail. When they are working they are good. Same with any condenser. It is good to carry spares and not worry about parts that may last your lifetime!

Re: Changing distributor points
Hey Pete, I don't really think there is a true mileage anymore. There are a lot of different points sold out in the market now, that I don't think a one mileage fits them all.
I run points until they have worn down enough that I can no longer adjust them, or if for some reason they have become quite pitted. If it is running good, I don't change anything. Leave the condenser in it. |

They can last 10 to 20,000 miles.

Re: Changing distributor points
Thanks for your reply everyone. I have 20 thousand on my car and it's running great. Lots of adjustment yet. I'll take your advice and leave them alone. As Henry said if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Re: Changing distributor points
45years, and they came with the car, 35 years A&L condenser
When people drove cars with points the quality most times are better than modern production Many time points are changed way too soon, it takes a while for the rubbing block to wear to the cam, if the cam is smooth the wear will slow way down if properly lubricated--- ideally the size of the contact surface allows it to burn away at the same rate of rubbing block wear |

Re: Changing distributor points
My last set of points the rub block wore out before the points, installed a new cam, points, condenser, note to self lube the cam oil the dizzy at each oil change!
