If you have the threaded style, buy the tool and put it on your impact driver, that worked very well for me. Tried extension bar on socket
would not budge.

I’ve had two different Model A’s for over 20 years, and neither came with that screen, and I’ve never felt the need for one…..very easy to fill up. I’ve also never heard of an incident involving a Model A without one.

It has a lot to do with static on adding gas also

To remove the screw-in type you do need the special tool (easy to make or buy) and a bit of Kroil or other penetrating lube

Some of the part sources have a filler extension that screws on to early tanks or twist locks on to late ones. This filling extension may work for that. They extend up about 2-inches above the bung. This link has an example.

ok thanks guys! Im going to mess with that today. I was having to hold the pump nozzle right at the opening of the tank and squeeze the handle just enough to get the flow going or else it would want to cut off.

Don't know if the looks where at the car or the idiot that couldn't get gas into it!!

In the Model A days, pumps did not pump at the rate they do today. So the blow back was not like today.
I’m old enough to recall such but never recall visible pumps!

Haha, Yea I was thinking of those old visible pumps when I was struggling at the pump. I said to the car, your not used to getting fuel this quick are you?

This is a model picture of a hand pumped to the glass tank above that
gravity flowed gas to the vehicle. Very little back pressure.

These type pumps were used in the 20's, 30's and early 40's.
I remember as a kid in the 30's that gas was sold by the gallon, (even cents, no .9)
for 10 cents per gallon.

While on maneuvers in rural France in 61, our convoy of ten trucks stopped at a glass pump at a farmers house. Took him a while to fill all vehicles, with that hand pump, but he had a big smile on his face

As for the Model A, I understand that there was potential safety / liability issues with some state governments when Henry introduced/ proposed the "up front, high" gas tank. The flame arrester may have been a legal response to those concerns. Maybe someone here knows for sure.

Quench limit. A flamefront will not pass through small openings, because energy is lost to the side walls therefore extinguishing the flames. The necessary dimensions depend on temperature, side wall material, fuel and oxidiser, of course. This is a standard device for instance in gas burner systems with pre-mix burners...
