Doug, Have come across so many rotten freeze plugs and so much tar like pan sludge in these flatties over the years that I pull the oil pan on every one for a clean out and new freeze plugs. Don't miss this opportunity to clean out your water jackets with some coat hangers or threaded rod and a shop vac.You won't believe the crud on the other side of those freeze plugs.

With respect, plugs that are securely retained by the attached adjacent oil pan flange aren't exactly "freeze" plugs as noted at the top of the first post.

None of them are "freeze" plugs, they are core plugs to get the core sand out of the casting! Sometimes a few have been lucky they popped when frozen, not very often.

Believe "freeze" plug is a slang term for "core" plug. As far as I know there is no such thing as an actual freeze plug. As stated openings are designed into engine castings to remove the core sand.
