Default bending roof moulding

What's the trick to bend the aluminum roof moldigs ( Murray 4 door )

I have not tried it yet and never did it also in the past .It seems to me if you bend the back corners , the open part of the molding wil close or buckle .

Somebody made a tool for it ? Would love to hear from you experts !!

Thanks in advance for the answer(s)

Gerard

Classtique Upholstery made a form out of wood. There is a curved wood block mounted on top of a larger piece of plywood. I haven't used it, nor seen it used, but Elizabeth says it does the job nicely.

Take a piece of plywood that is the same thickness as the moulding from top to bottom and cut the same curve into it that you need to make. Then sandwich it between two pieces of plywood that extend well beyond the curve , so when you bend the moulding around the curve, the top and bottom of the moulding are held in one plane by the top and bottom layers. Get some thin strips of aluminum, two or three, and place them in the slot where the curve will be, so they hold the slot from closing when you bend the curve. You need at least two strips so they can slide against each other to prevent binding. They should fit the inside from top to bottom and not extend above the top of the moulding. Place the moulding in your jig, and bend to match the curve. You will have to hold the moulding firmly to prevent it from twisting. The jig will do most of that, but you still have to exercise care as you do it. Remove the strips when the curve is complete. Both Marco and Terry Burtz posted photos of the jig on the old Fordbarn, but I don't know if those posts are still accessible.

Hi, Do you bend both the nailing piece and the gutter piece at the same time??? In other words, do you put them togather and bend them togather??? I've got the roof on, now the gutters. Thanks in advance for all your info. Harold

Hi Harold , I have bend the top moulding with great success but NOT the rain gutters. I am sure the other Barners will come up with a solution. Gerard

Hi Gerard! I am not one to picture how things are made from a description like Pat in Santa Cruz made. Which was very good but I was lost at the part where you get some thin stripe of aluminum. If you made one of these jigs would it be possible to get some photo of it. I have the roof moulding for my 29 special coupe and have been trying to figure out how to bend it. Are they the same bend ? Richard in Manteca.

Did mine the same way here is a picture of my jig done with some junk wood. . I found the sandwiched piece has to be the same thickness as the aluminum to keep the aluminum gutter from twisting when bending. The aluminum is fairly soft and easy to bend. This was a Tudor rain gutter. Zeke

Zeke ; Thanks. Great setup for bending the aluminium rain gutters. Could you explain how you bent the flat tack strips for them. They are very flimsy .
