alternator wiring
This is probably a dumb question so please forgive me if it is...
I'm helping a buddy wire up his '50 Ford F1. He had a fuel injected 302/AOD installed but the guy who installed it really botched up the wiring and fuel system so we've been redoing it along with a little restoration of the interior and engine compartment. Anyway, my question is in regards to wiring the alternator which came with the motor ('89 Grand Marquis) and the new EZ wiring harness. Should I connect the alternator through the EZ wiring harness? The reason I ask is because the guy who installed the engine didn't; of course the truck was still using it's original wiring harness (very scary). I have the computer wiring pretty much squared away and I'm starting on the chassis harness (EZ Wiring harness) and am trying to figure out how the two (computer/engine and EZ harness) need to tie together. thanks in advance for the help. Re: alternator wiring
I would call EZ and ask them to send or email a schematic on how to do that. If you have the model and serrial of your wire kit when you call, it will be better.

Re: alternator wiring
Good point Ole Don. I'll give EZ a call.

Re: alternator wiring
Hi Dave, with the help of Google, it looks like the '89 Merc had a voltage regulator. Unless the computer regulates the voltage, I can't rationalize any need for a connection between the alternator wiring and the engine management.
Good luck with your project and just remember not to let the smoke out. |

Re: alternator wiring
haha! Thanks 40cpe! Yeah, electrical stuff doesn't work near as good when the smoke is released. :-)
Your son suggested I have a fire extinguisher handy when it's time to "fire" up the truck. I think I'll push the truck out of the garage too. |

Looking at the schematic for the Alternator it appears to be a fairly straight forward setup with a few of the wires tieing together and terminating at the battery and another wire running to the ignition switch. |

Re: alternator wiring
I just HATE it when the smoke leaks out of parts. It SO expensive to get it back in there, and I feel so dumb!
