Default Replacing head gasket

I am going from cast iron heads to aluminum heads. I noticed that when pulling the heads there was silicon on the stud holes. Should I put rtv on the studs to prevent leaking? Anything else I need to do special besides the difference in torque settings that I need to do? This is a 60hp flathead.

Torque them to a 45 foot pounds. You'll wanna do that a couple of times after your flathead heating up to tempature. I say seven times just to make sure. As for a thread sealer I would recommend the Permatex 2.

Ensure the heads easily slip on and off before hand; straighten 'bent' head studs until the heads fit without binding. I then always liberally coat each and every stud with nickel based antiseize compound. This will certainly pay dividends in years to come when you wanna remove them.

Be careful on the torque setting. The factory spec was 50 lbs on cast iron heads and 30 lbs on aluminum heads. Be sure to use hardened steel washers under the nuts when going against aluminum heads.
