This is a genuine "old timey" Flathead Ford V8 Engine Stand. The Engine gets total full support on both side with this unit.

Perfection! What company made that? Is it a K.R. Wilson?

Unfortunately, I cannot see a Name on this "old timey" Flathead Ford V8 Engine Stand. The Cradle is a Cast Piece and very heavy. The Top picture show the Cast Bracket for one side, but unfortunately, I don't have the Matching Cast Bracket for the other side. As a substitute, I use a "homemade" welded Steel Bracket, but it does the job. I have included pictures of the Engine in various positions. You simply rotate the Engine and lock it into one of four positions. You can work with confidence on the Engine, knowing that it is fully supported on both sides. I would like to locate a Cast Bracket to replace the Welded Steel one that I have to use. You can also turn the Engine around on the Turntable, which also has four positions.

Cool engine stand you got there - mercman from oz.

Im ready to go on - need to messúre and drill the holes.
Still a little worried about hanging to engine from 4 exhaust bolts but it will have to do it.

Use an exhaust manifold clamped to the plate as a guide to drill your four holes. Check and make sure, but the FRONT exhaust holes on BOTH sides of your block are probably 7/16", where-as the rears are 3/8". If so, your drilled holes will need to be 7/16" for the bracket to work on BOTH sides of your engine. Nice job! Four bolts with FLAT washers will accommodate your engine just fine. DD

Sooooooo the KR.Wilson engine stand bolts to the exhaust manifold ..... I have 2 of them , one I call Dick (Spadaro) as he all but gave it to me , has major weld in original base , I know of 2 guys that have K.R.Wilson stands but no bases . I have seen many K.R.Wilson engine stands for sale without bases or with home made bases .
Sooooooo did what happened to all the original bases ?????
Did engines fall from mounting them to the exhaust bosses & break the bases ?????
If so , this is not a good way to mount them either !!!
I also have a "Clayborne" engine stand (Thanks to Paul Bradley & Don Rodgers ) (I need the adapters that bolt to engine for it or specs to make them) & it is a great way to mount our famous flatheads !!!

I'm still looking for a Manzel 6005 flathead mounting bracket to go with my Manzel Aluminum engine stand if anyone has one collecting dust under your work bench.

I am really hoping that Lawrie starts fabricating these in quantity, makes a fortune doing it, and then brings one over for me on his next visit...

Should the 8BA engine be mounted by the exhaust ports also? Since the bellhousing is not casted in?

There are going to be a lot of different ideas on this! But the major issue with the early blocks is how thin the casting is in the bellhousing area and how it extends the weight (center of gravity) of the engine further away from the mounting bolts. The 8BA doesn't have these issues. I don't think you would ever have a problem mounting the 8BA engine using the rear bolts. However the side mounting keeps the center of gravity closer to the mounting point (the exhaust bolt holes) with both engines.

Note on early engine mounting by bellhousing: a lot of people get away with mounting the early blocks using the bellhousing bolts, it is not like they are going to break every time it's done. You will have comments like "been doing it my whole life and never had a problem". I'm sure it depends on the individual block and the total weight of the engine. To me it is not worth taking the chance for the fairly rare times it does happen!!! These engines are not that easy to come by and a lot of work and money can go down the drain with a mishap, so why take the chance!

What size and grade of bolts to hang an early V-8 from exhaust manifold holes?

What size and grade of bolts to hang a late V-8 (like 52-53) from back of block?

The length will depend on the mounting plates you have, my plates are about 3/8" thick, so I use about 1 to 1 1/8" long bolts. You should use Grade 5 or better. Also, please pay attention to the front exhaust port bolt holes - every block I've seen has them drilled to 7/16 NC.

Idea for Double Supported Engine Stand:

All you'd need to do is buy/make TWO of the typical engine stand support brackets (or buy them from Stumpy's Fab works - he makes good stuff!). Then, you just need to fabricate a second upright for your stand with the same slip-fit tube that is on the back of your stand - but on the front. Then you'll have TWO slip fit tubes to rotate the engine on (supported on both sides). You could make the front support a 'bolt-on' setup - so you can still use the stand for other engine types that bolt on the bell-housing area.

If you're still concerned about hanging engine from four bolts, the pic below which ALSO shows transmission bolted to rear of engine, should ease any doubts you have. DD

I have the material to make two of these for my engine stands. I was skeptical but after seeing the picture above, I'm going ahead with making them. Who would hang that piece of work like that if it wasn't safe...... MARK
