Default is it a Cruiseomatic or a C-4?

Friend has a 260 & an automatic tranny. The tranny has a 1965 & later starter on it (no plunger, just the gear type) He knows little or nothing about that except it came out of a 1963 Galaxie.

First year for the C-4 was 1964. That said, can you get a picture of the pan? Any numbers on it? Any other info?

Both have removable bellhousings, but doesn't the C4 have an aluminium case versus the iron case of the COM and FOM?

From these pictures it should be easy to tell what you have.

Wasn't there also an FX designation for one of the automatics? It differed from the FMXs and someone told me a long time ago that it was Borg Warner trans. I remember them in the dealership for service, the techs said they were oddballs. We had almost full trans parts stock coverage but not for them. Apparently they weren't used very much or for very long. I'm thinking early/mid 60s maybe?

thanks guys, I'll check that out. Its somewhat greasy but looks like to be an aluminum case and I'll scour thru it for a casting number

If you can flip it over, look at the diagrams of the shape of the pans. A C-4 as 11 bolts, a FMX/Cruise-o has 13, etc.
