A guy would have to REALLY love the process to take on the restoration of an early V8 car or truck today. From what I understand, 25k buys a paint job. Since I have never bought a restored (or even running) old ford, what would this list of cars cost in their heyday? About what year were these cars most valuable? And a barrel nose pickup for more than a '35 phaeton? wtf?

Phaetons have taken the ultimate hit on prices in that last 5-10 years. They are a tough sell. Most all of us (wives especially) that relate to these old Fords want roll up windows. Those prices at the auction are a reflection of two things. The economy and the number of people who relate to these old Fords. Take a look at mid to late 60's Mustang prices. They are going for more money than nice old Ford V-8s.

I'm shocked at the price of a 33 Phaeton. I'd buy a phaeton in that condition any day for that money. If you have a phaeton for sale PM me but then again you're probably not a seller at that price.

thought/felt the same exact thing!!!! (See bucket list/Current Avatar) I would, however, amend your statement to 33 "ANYTHING" I would buy for that money/condition!!!

TJ

It's not just the V8 Fords experiencing this trend, spent the weekend with a good friend that is into Austin Healeys (Club). Experiencing a lot of the same issues AS well as many other club'/makes

MOST surprising to me was the 32 & 34 Woody and the 32 Cabriolet!!!!

These prices were an absolute steal!
If I were there, I would have bought the 36 Roadster, the 34 Station Wagon, the 32 Station Wagon and the 32 Cabriolet.
I thought that everything should have brought 50% more !?
I saw all of George's cars 8 or 9 years ago and they are excellent.
Meeting George was an experience.

Yes if we all were there the prices would have been a lot higher.

I would love to have that 32 Cabriolet...especially at that price!

I can't see the sale prices on Mecum's site, what did the hot rod 32 and 34 Roadsters sell for?

The original crowd is dying off. The next generation all want's '32-'34 Fords with 500 hp. You would be a fool to try and built an original car from parts when you can buy them that cheap. Plus, those older restoration were probably real nice cars to begin with. Where are you going to get a nice body from without buying an entire car like these.

Yes the market for our type of cars is declining but these selling prices are way to low. Mecum bidders are spending big bucks on Shelby's, Broncos, Camero's, Mustangs GTO's Superbirds and the like. Not the place to sell your vintage Ford.

I was in Georges' shop and he wanted to sell them. His prices were insane. The 32 Cab. was over $100K and the rest were about the same. I would have liked to talk to him but he thought he knew more than the rest of us.

Maybe Mecum isn't the correct venue to sell an early V/8. The Cabriolet appears to be a bargain based on the pictures.

Most of the Ford affectionados are right here on the Fordbarn with a worldwide membership. Many of them would have loved to purchase these fine cars and would have been willing to pay in excess of the prices paid. And---no commissions paid when sold on the Fordbarn!

There are two places where the serious Ford V8 hobbiest reside. That is the Early Ford V8 Club and here on Fordbarn. Many EFV8 Club members and Fordbarners participate in both. The Facebook early V8 groups are what I consider amatures.

I don't pay attention to Mecum or JB auctions because I have always thought of those platforms as a place for people with more money than brains. Maybe I should be paying attention?

The '35 Phaeton is now For Sale on Hemmings for $39,500.00

It's listed as a convertible, but in the description it's referred to as a Phaeton...
