Default Stop light switch and LEDs

I am in the process of putting 12 volt LED stop lights on my Town Sedan.

I found a neat fully sealed 6 to 12 volt step up transformer and I figured that all I needed to do was splice into the stop light circuit.

Before I mounted anything I made sure that the plan would work.
LEDs are voltage direction sensitive so I made sure that the positive leg was connected to the ground.
It worked great during the test so I mounted and wired everything.

The standard stop light worked but the LEDs didn’t.

I checked the wiring - everything was OK.
Finally I put a volt meter on the stop light switch input and it showed a strong 6 volts.
Then I checked the other side of the switch and only got 3 volts.

I then ran a jumper to bypass the switch and the LEDs worked.

Looks like I need a new switch!

If the switch input shows 6v then the transformer must be mounted after the switch. How about mounting it before the switch. The switch might be able to be cleaned up. They are usually not hard to fix.
