Default Shutoff valve leak

I have a very small gas leak at the shutoff valve. I have attempted to tighten it and it still has been leaking, although alot less. It does not appear it can be tightened any more. Do I need to drain the gas tank and clean the valve or replace the valve and reassemble?

Well you didn't say what year so I will tell you on my 31 indented firewall I had to replace the valve and inserted a screen at the same time. I tried several things to get my old valve to stop leaking but utlimately a new valve solved the problem.

Both rebuild kits and replacement valves are available from any of the vendors. Replacement is a little bit more expensive, but it sure is easy. It is a good idea to install an inlet screen like TinCup suggested.

Thanks for the advice. I will replace the valve and add the inlet screen.

Seems like that screen would be a royal pain to clean if it gets clogged up from a lot of rust fast no?

Had same problem with my 31 Slant. It required a gas tank drain and a new shutoff.

I can understand how you would think that but in my experience it is not a problem.

I have never had a problem with that with any of the 4 Model A's that I have owned. The screen filter keeps the rust particles floating around inside the gas tank instead of entering the fuel line and clogging the line or the carburetor jets.

Oh, it goes inside the tank? I pictured it being inline right before the shutoff valve.

Do you have a link to this screen?

I made a little tester.

Rebuild the valve and put low air pressure on and test it in a bucket of water

Works for me.

PS. bought a new one some time ago tested it before installing and is was leaking!

The fine rust is not too much of a problem, but any little chunks of hard rust will score the valve. That's the part I don't like. When you turn it on or off you can be trying to shear those little pieces in two, scoring even a new valve.I use the finger screens in everything I take apart.

Ditto what Keith said. My tanks are very clean and rust free, but I always use screens in any gas tank, including my motorbike.

I've had 2 "in the tank" screens that each lasted 10 years before they started to clog and cause problems.
