Default Help! - Gase Gage

I'm "rebuilding" my gas gage because the cork float sank last summer. But I did something dumb - When I completely disassembled the gage a couple of months ago, I didn't note the order in which the parts (two cork gaskets, sight glass and black metal disc with level line) stack up under the "star" retaining ring.

Installing the finished gage assembly into the tank is pretty straight forward with the large cork gasket going under the gage assy flange and the two brass ring-gaskets on top of the flange - then the large "hex" retaining ring screwing in on top of it all.

I sure would appreciate someone helping me with the gage re-assembly sequence!

Note: I bought two kits from Snyders: One with a cork float and cork gaskets, and the other with a plastic/synthetic float and rubbet gaskets.

I have decided to use the plastic float so I never again have to deal with a soggy cork sinking, and I'm using the cork gaskets because they seem to have more thickness and "compressibility compliance" to allow them to be compressed tighter for a better leak seal. Any comments on this choice?

Thanks in advance,

Earle

I would only use CORK seals on the guage. The others get soft from the new overpriced gasojunk they sell today.

ABSOLUTELY. Stick with cork ONLY for the gaskets. It's a quick job to replace them as needed.

The HARD "plastic" floats do seem to hold up to ethanol, though.

I had neoprene gaskets turn into black goo and run down the inside of the glass over one winter, just from e10 FUMES.

NO problem with cork replacements now in four years.

Earle: Don Turley is exactly right about the assembly order. Let us know how you make out with your cork (I hope) gaskets.

I was given a gas gauge tool set that had the cork type gaskets. It had been sitting around for many years I think. The cork was very very thin, is that the normal, would old new cork still be good ? When I got the rubber ones they looked so much better to use. I know now about the fuel issues, and I will probily order a complete new gauge anyway. The coat hanger rod that holds the float was pretty rusty the lasr time I was in there?
