Red face 49 53 mercury clutch/f/w ?

I have an 8cm eng. I did not get any clutch components with it. How di measure the pressure plate size? NAPA says it is a 12''. when \I start looking for parts they are all 9.5.

Please help.

Thanks,

The few Mercurys, that i been around, all had 10 inch Borg & Beck clutches in them.

There has been a lot of changing of parts on these engines over the years, so let's make sure we know what you have. There should be 6 holes around the outside of the flywheel. They will either be evenly spaced (Borg & Back - Mercury) or the sets of two closer together (Long - Ford). Then measure the distance between two opposite holes and report back.

11" doesn't sound right, as that is a truck clutch, and as pointed out earlier, Mercury's had 10" clutches while Ford cars had 9 1/2" clutches.

34fivewindow is correct. 8CM denotes a 1949 Merc engine. 49-51 cars used a 10 in clutch, not 9 1/2. Tubman's flywheel determination is a must do. Here's some reading:

8CM Mercury is '49 -'51
Perhaps more important at this point is to determine the size and spline count of the transmission that it is going to be bolted to.
Then use that as part of the information needed to determine the application.

Tubman,
the f/w is set up for the long style, 3 sets of 2 bolts. best measurement is 11.2 ,and 12''.
It is a 8cm,and it is the f/w off that eng.

51 Merc,
I have the 6 mos only 51 Mercury bell housing ,and using a 63 up ford top load 3 speed trans. It does not matter, but it has a Jeep shifter mated to the top. I also need to know what clutch disc to use.

Thanks for the info,

jim

Call Fort Wane clutch and Driveline. In Indiana and tell them exactly what you have and they will put a package together with every thing you will need. They are the best .

That is why I say you have to determine what size and tooth count the '63 transmission spline is before you look for dia. of disc.

51, ok. Trans is not at the house now, might be a week before I can give dia and tooth count.
Thanks,

jim.

You might check out this link which has some of the common bolt patterns. Ford 9.5" Long is not shown, but I've read that the measurement is 3" between close bolts and 7.5" between others (vs. 3 1/8" & 7 7/8" for the 10" Long)... Ken
