Default Oil Return Pipe will not fit on Mike's oil Filter Valve Cover

I just installed my Mikes full flow oil filter valve cover on my 29 and my oil return pipe is to short. Has this happened to anyone and what is the part number for the oil return pipe that will work with the Mikes valve cover?

Thanks
Ron

I just took another look and it seems that the oil return is higher up on the original valve cover than on the Mike's valve cover with oil filter. The oil return pipe does have a bend in it and it looks like I may be able to heat it up and make it a straight shot. Is this a good or bad idea?

Thanks
Ron

Ron,
You need a later model return pipe, sounds like you have a 1928 one. I had the same problem and dug around in my parts to find a longer one!

There are early & later valve cover/oil return pipes. The earlier one has the oil drain hole in the valve cover higher and a shorter tube. Henry decided to lower the oil level in the valve chamber so the later style has the hole in the valve cover lower and the return pipe a bit longer. It sounds like you have the early cover/pipe. All you need to do is find a later pipe, they are a lot more common than the early ones. If you can't find one I have spacers that you can cut into the pipe to make longer by braising, welding or silver soldering. Many years ago when I was assembling engines for a rebuilder & he made up these spacers to fit the early short pipes to fit the later valve covers.

If you can not find a later longer one or don't want to extend the one you have, the vendors have the late model replacement https://www.brattons.com/may-29-31-o...-assembly.html

I think this is a good fix for the short term but I am not sure I would trust it long term. If it fails no more oil and no more engine

Unbelievable. This cheap hose not even good for hot water let alone oil. In the marine world you would never install a hose below the water line or under pressure without double clamps. That hose will burn/ melt. Although not under pressure there is sure is a lot heat there. A potential disaster. Do it right or not at all.

When I got this A it had a rubber hose at that location, not liking rubber there I replaced the rubber w/vinyl. It's been there for 4 or 5 years (maybe longer) and no problems. If/when I get the proper tube I'll replace it.
It's kinda neat, one can watch the oil flowing.

New oil return pipes are around $40......I would get one before you need a engine.
