Default Crankshaft End Play

How do you check crankshaft end play? I have dial indicator. Should rods be removed first?

No, put a Dial Indicator on the front pulley, and, pry the crank, back and forth. Don't break the pulley, if you don't have the pan off. Pry, on center, of the crank.

You can. Just push or pry the shaft fore and aft. Factory specs are .004” to .007”
It will move easy.

Thanks. I need to check bearing clearances as well. Hopefully my babbit is good.

I fitted my crank end play at .002. If it turns it's good, you don't need the crank slopping around, none of the newer engines do this, the Model A is no different, it's just another motor. A sloppy crank can break your rear main edges off, fit it snug.

Most flanges break because of lack of or improper peening.

Checked out at just under .015", about double the maximum tolerance. After pulling rods and pistons I've decided to do full rebuild with new babbit. I aim to put this old truck to work so I want it right. As someone said, the AA needs 100% of the engine just to get out of it's own way.
