Default Running Boards, general question

Although the estimated cost per set will probably keep me from taking advantage of Mr. Ehrenhofer's offer, it got me thinking about the running boards on my '31 roadster that are original but have rubber mats that are in poor condition. I really want to "restore" the original boards if at all possible.

Questions:

1. Is the rubber matting with the "authentic" pattern, texture, material & look, etc. available for purchase anywhere?

2. How difficult would it be to remove the old matting and properly apply the new matting? Can it be done in place without removing the running boards from the car?

3. Where can absolutely authentic-looking zinc edge strips be purchased?

Thanks for any thoughts on this,

Earle

The '31 boards had "molded" matting. It is difficult to duplicate. Rootlieb made an excellant reproduction that would be very difficult to match. Gar Williams

Earle, it may be possible to purchase the jigs & fixtures from the person that was installing the matting for Rootlieb and you take over the process and supply all of us. Bob Burdick makes a very nice looking zinc trim that could be used.

I'm surprised Hunley Acuff doesn't do them. He does the later Ford models starting in 1935 I think but none of the earlier models. I guess he just isn't tooled up or too much previous competition. I here his 1940 boards are better than some original factory survivors.

Earle I know these are expensive but with the time you will put into trying to achieve a good board you could rob the piggy bank and get the best!
With these boards you will not be dissappointed. By the way, it is probably several months away before this gets to production so maybe by then you can stash some money away for this project. I hope that is possible because these boards are the best and hard to tell from the original,
Ken

BTW, are the "other" repro '31 running boards any good?

I need to find just a right hand board- my original is banana-shaped.

The Rootlieb boards look very good at 10 inches, the other boards might look ok at 10 feet.

Thanks, Brent, for the thoughtful suggestion but that's not my calling in life right now! Too much like work for a busy but contented retired guy.

Ken, your aurgement is almost persuasive. I'll start feeding my piggie bank and give it some serious thought.

Thanks, Gents,

Earle
