I have water in cylinders 3-4 in my flathead 226h.Replacing head gasket again, getting rid of copper one, installing all new bolts. If this does not fix problem where do you think water is coming from,it leaks down at nite, but during the day it runs great, loses about 1 gallon of 50/50 mix every 3 weeks, any answers would be great thanks

Re: engine problem 48 ford f1
did you check to see if the head is flat, no cracks in the head itself, leaking into two adjacent cylinders usually ends up being head gasket problem

Have you checked to see if coolant is getting into the crankcase? If it is your oil will look like a chocolate milkshake.

Re: engine problem 48 ford f1
I would use a straight edge on the head. If its off by .002 or more, have it machined flat. Find a set of thread chasers. Clean the head bolt holes with that, not a tap. A tap will remove metal, you only want to remove crud. Clean the block with a scraper, then sand paper if you must to make it clean. Wire brush the threads on the bolts, then oil the threads or use Permatex on them, and a drop of oil under the head of the bolt.Torque in steps, 20, 30, 35, and up. Inspect around 3 and 4 for cracks. Small cracks may be sealed with a crack repair in a bottle, but the cooling system must be clean first. Drive a few miles with pure 100 % vinegar, then flush.
