Thread Size
Hi Again Guys, I have a 1937 steering box I'm installing on a 36. Rebuilding it now. 1st couple threads were smashed when I took the nut off the steering sector shaft it turned the threads bigger than the original. would like to rethread. I have another nut. Wondering if anybody knows thread size on shaft. I think it's 7/8 x 20 or 24 can't tell. Sure do appreciate all the help I've received on this restore.

Re: Thread Size
If the same thread is used on 37-48 passenger sector shafts as on the 48 truck sector, it's 7/8-14. The Ford part # for that particular nut is 351153-S.
Thread pitch gauges are really cheap.... and indispensable. |

Re: Thread Size
AND "IF" its 7/8-14 that is the "Standard" pitch for NF thread SO depending on the "type" of nut (or tap/die) it shouldn't be too difficult to find.......IF it is a "die" you seek......MY local NAPA store had it!!!!

Re: Thread Size
When I was faced with that problem, I used a split factory nut, put it over the good threads, welded the split back together, used heat on the smashed threads, and slowly and carefully backed the nut off, reforming the mashed threads in the process.
Just an idea, that worked for me. I have also been told that it is possible to buy a "split reforming die". (I haven't looked for that.) |

I wouldn't want to buy an expensive one, but some of the imported tap and die sets go up that big and are not a lot of money. To be honest a 14 tpi thread could probably be cleaned up nicely with a small three cornered file. Mart. |

Re: Thread Size
I have THREAD File which has saved me many times.. It gives me 8 choices to cleanup damaged threads and I would not be without it.kx
