The arrestor fell into the tank while fueling so many times that I removed it 40 years ago.

The Model A used 2 different types of arrestors depending on the year of the car. I could be mistaken but the earlier year cars were screwed in /threaded into the opening. These will not fall into the tank. Later versions had tabs at the top of the arrestor and simply sat on top of the opening - they simply lift out to be removed. These are the arrestors that fall into the tank if you press hard enough to bend the tabs. Sorry, do not have pictures and do not know when the 2 different types were used. I have a late 30 Pickup that has the tab style.

Don't know why he thinks it will help in a crash. It's not like it wraps around the outside of the tank or something.
Maybe if the passengers wore one ...

Bratton’s lists it as a screen which also serves as a “spark arrester” for $12.05. Their screen does not screw in nor does it have tabs, “it just sits there”.

If you want the original type it’s $50!

Thanks for the clarification. My tank does not have one. Someone remarked that the tank fills more slowly with this device. Does that mean that the nozzle “clicks off” a number of times without the tank actually being full (because the fuel hasn’t had time to go through the screen into the tank)?

I think it does fill more slowly plus in California we have those gas recirculating devices on the nozzle that makes it even hard to fill the tank even in a modern car.

I finally gave up filling my Roadster at the gas station. I take a five gallon plastic gas carrier to station when I fill my Daily Driver, and I use the gas carrier and a big funnel to fill the Model A gas tank at home. I don’t tour so that is the best solution for me.

Just as an aside to this discussion I would like to mention I am an old timer and from my youth days I recall all gasoline trucks that delivered gasoline to service stations had a chain from the truck chassis that simply dragged on the street.
