40 windshield trim, Convert and Wagon
Read all the posts on 37-39 trim, 40 looks to just hook over the windshield frame and not attach to the rubber, can it be installed after the rubber and glass or must it go in first. Think I got this postin stuff figured out. Grandkids are in school, me and the computer are on our own. And a Very Merry Christmas to all.

Re: 40 windshield trim, Convert and Wagon
I have both a wagon and convertible, and I had the stainless on before putting the glass in. One big reason you would want to do it with the glass out is that there is a clip that holds the 2 ends of the stainless down that is right behind the windshield wiper towers. This clip has a tang that goes down and then 90 degrees UNDER the glass/rubber. You wouldn't be able to put it in with glass already in place. Even if this wasn't an issue, I would be concerned about breaking the seal between the rubber and the windshield opening. If you click on my avatar, you can see some pictures of my wagon in a public album. And Merry Christmas to you too!

Re: 40 windshield trim, Convert and Wagon
Thanks for the help, looked at a 40 convert at coffee Sun and it had no clips, just the trim ends basically butted together, thought I was home free. Just got the trim off of Craigs List, but of course no clips. If winter ever hits down here in So Cal and I quit driving the wagon, I'll pull the glass and see about fabing some clips. thanks again and stay dry.

Re: 40 windshield trim, Convert and Wagon
It's easier to stay dry then stay warm up here! I restored a 40 convert for a guy and he was missing those clips so I had to make them and it wasn't too hard. Get some stainless and bend a pair up and polish them. I will add a picture to my 40 woodie album in a few minutes. The width of the clip is 3/8". It just wraps over the joint and inside down to the bottom of the windshield opening and then bends 90 degrees so the window holds it down. The corners are rounded out where you see them.

Re: 40 windshield trim, Convert and Wagon
The clips screw in under the rubber so it has to be in before the rubber and the inside garnish mlgs is really what holds the glass in

Re: 40 windshield trim, Convert and Wagon
Interesting, I have had the glass out of my own wagon and convert, and 2 other cars not mine and none had a screw in the clips. Maybe an early/late deal. If you do put a screw in there, use a countersink and flathead screw. Also, shim the glass/rubber up so the rubber you see from the outside has an even margin all around. If you don't shim it, there will be more showing at the top then the bottom. You can use rubber or pop sickle sticks, whatever to hold the glass/rubber unit up to the level you want.
Yes, stainless steel about the same gauge as the trim, then polish it. |

Re: 40 windshield trim, Convert and Wagon
I've had several open cars and wagons 37 and 40. Several had screws holding the bottom tab whereas others did not. Don't recall if it was a year thing or an assembly plant deal. As stated above, they are simple to fab.

Re: 40 windshield trim, Convert and Wagon
At one time Drake had these repoed but he quit selling them. The clip is made to the stainless itself and the little screw goes in bottom then the rubber goes on glass and the whole thing goes to frame inside and the inside garnish mlg hods it all in.That is the way mine did

Re: 40 windshield trim, Convert and Wagon
On my '37 cabriolet cowl the clips were held in place with a small pan head stainless screw. And yes, these would need to be installed before the rubber seal goes in. They would be easy to replicate with some thin stainless sheet metal.
