40 Ford serial # location
Looking for serial # location. Was told it was on frame next to steering box. I cleaned the frame about 8" and no sign of numbers. Is there another place to look for numbers? Thanks in advance.

Re: 40 Ford serial # location
Top of the transmission if original.
On the frame clean it all they way up to the front crossmember from the firewall. It varies in location. Is it the original frame ? |

Re: 40 Ford serial # location
Should be left side right by the firewall on the frame and also on the transmission bell housing under the front floor board of the car (IF matching)

FYI, here's a useful site for information on early Ford serial numbers: http://www.vanpeltsales.com/FH_web/f...ialnumbers.htm

Re: 40 Ford serial # location
My 40 coupe and wagon have the number closer to the front x member then the firewall.

Re: 40 Ford serial # location
I've had several '40s and always found the SN# right near the front crossmember on top of the left frame rail.

However, there was an occasional vehicle that had the number almost next to the firewall and more than a few that had it directly beneath the horns. I believe the number was supposed to be near the cross member. Remember that these numbers were hand stamped by humans so no doubt, they (numbers) didn't always go where they were supposed to go.

Re: 40 Ford serial # location
That's correct. Two of them can't be seen (as you know) when the body is on the frame.

Re: 40 Ford serial # location
Different assembly plants had different people doing the stamping too. They all likely had instructions laid down by the head shed in Dearborn but that doesn't mean the instructions were well followed to a T.
