Default 306 Cu In

There is a thread on the HAMB about Vern Tardel building an AV8 with a 306 in flathead. What is the bore/stroke of a 306? What is the largest cube possible flathead with water jackets?

You will have to scroll down till you see the video.

Gene I am guessing Verns engine is 3 3/8 bore x 4 1/4 stroke ? I have not read the article . I have 2 engines with this combo.
Cheers
Tony

3-3/8 X 4-1/4 does work out to 304+ inches. DD

So tony , tell us more please. How do they perform?
There is one out in nz , well that's what is signed on the door (306 or 304)but it doesn't seem to really haul at the nostalgia drags , kind of sounds flat . No pun intended.
Do these rev well . The low end torque should give a real kick.
We are planning a 3 5/16 by 4 1/4 stroke with a kiwi L 100 cam.

I found a site to calculate volume. It works out to 3.375" plus .010" puts it right on 306".

"What is the largest cube possible flathead with water jackets?"

I built one with 345 ci. It is possible to go slightly more.
I have built several in the 320 to 325 range.

Bore was 3.405.
Stroke was 4.750.
New 21A rods, shotpeened, reconditioned and bored to length. Matched set so it took a very minimum to balance.
Lots of grinding in the block.
The engine was very hard on rings because of the short skirt pistons and lots of clearance.

This was one engine I was later very sorry I built.
Although it was a winner, the customer told me it was for the drags but he put it in a circle track roadster running under a 300 cubic inch rule. They caught it and took all his points and fined him but it really pissed me off.
