'36 spare tire cover seal won't fit
Before I got my 5W painted, I dug out the old, nearly gone, spare tire seal. I bought a new one from Mac. I am trying to install it. One way it is too fat/thick to fit, the other way it is way too thin, unless I damage the metal cover and crimp it with pliers, which I would prefer not to do. Or I could glue it in, but which way is correct?

Before you damage the steel cover I would try to order one from another supplier. It might be a better fit. I purchased my rubber for the spare tire cover for my '46 Woodie from Dennis Carpenter and it fit perfectly.

Re: '36 spare tire cover seal won't fit
The thin side goes into the groove on the spare tire cover. Is that foam rubber or solid rubber? I have used the seal from Drake (solid rubber) for two installations and they it fit fine without crimping the cover. It should stay in place without glue. It would appear that if you use this seal, you would need to glue in place.

Re: '36 spare tire cover seal won't fit
The thin side is way too thin, it would take something twice as thick, and both sides are very solid rubber, I would need vice grips to crush the thick part enough to get it in.
Monday I will check with some of the other suppliers. I do appreciate input from others. |

Re: '36 spare tire cover seal won't fit
I'd installed a Carpenter seal a few months ago. It was rubber - not foam, and fit wonderfully.

Re: '36 spare tire cover seal won't fit
I was able to get it in. I inserted the larger round edge into the grove. I put the small flap towards the center of the cover. I used lots of vaseline and a wide screwdriver and pushed it. It took about an hour and a half but I didn't scratch anything.
I started installing it dead center at the bottom. I should have left myself about 8 or 10 inches as it seemed to scoot as I went around it and now instead of being right at the bottom, it is 8 inches to the right. There was about 2 feet of extra gasket and I did leave myself some extra just in case what I installed shrinks. Now on to reassembling the rest of the car after the paint job. Thanks everyone for your input. Last edited by Steve Kennedy; 10-10-2020 at 01:20 PM. Reason: . |

Here's a closeup from an engineering drawing showing the seal (anti-rattler) in place
