Default AA transmission in an A

Help! Has anyone reading this ever put a "AA" 4 speed transmission in an "A"? My "AA" transmission, bell housing, special adapter, and universal joint are about 1" overall longer than the stock "A" setup. What am I doing wrong? Were their more than one type of "AA" transmission? Mine says 2-10-30 on it. Is it possible that the rear end can be pushed back the 1" without damaging the rear spring and shackles? I know the motor isn't about to move forward. Someone please help!

I have not done it but I would assume it has been done before. Not sure why you are wanting to put one in an A as the 4 speed won't get you any more speed but just an extra low 1st gear.

I actually have a Model-A 82B chassis that came from the Texas panhandle that has a AA transmission installed that supposedly was ordered new that way. We discussed this topic probably 10 or more years ago here, and if I recall correctly someone said the transmission output shaft and the rear coupler were different. In the next few days I will be going down to where the chassis is if you would like me to take some pictures, I will. Maybe we can tell by the pix what is different.

Dave, the daughter of the original owner of the pick-up that we bought said her Dad used the truck to feed livestock out of well into the 60's. She said he would get out and walk beside the truck. I am guessing that would have been perfect for the AA transmission.

Vince has the info you need on his site. http://www.fordgarage.com/pages/aafourspeedachassis.htm
I have used the AA-7085-B bearing retainer, it is about 1/8" thicker than the
A-7085-E retainer. You also need the special U-joint A-7090-C.

I have these same parts and the entire unit is still 1" longer than the
original. Did you force the rear end and drive shaft to the rear to get the set up in?

I do not have the answer, but the AA that I had had a short drive shaft, then a long one. I would think the pickup had a different setup so you would not have to change the drive shaft. I do know the AA bell housing is shorter. are you using a AA bell housing if not that is the problem.

I am using an AA bell housing. The A one will not bolt up to the 4 speed.

3/8 of an inch wouldn't bother me too much but I am afraid that one inch would throw the backend really out of wack.

I measured a AA 4-speed, bell housing and bearing retainer at 15 7/8" and an A
bell housing, trans and bearing retainer at 15 9/16". That is 5/16" longer but
the bearing retainer on the 4-speed was the AA-7085-B which is 5/16" thicker
than the correct A-7085-E retainer so with the correct retainer the A and AA setup
should the the same length over all.

thank you Bob. This will help a lot. I wonder now if the original one I was using as a standard is a little shorter?

George DeAngelis showed me a picture of the assy line with a pickup on it and in chalk on the firewall it said 4 speed. This was back in the mid 90's.

Bob C

When you used the A-7085-B did you have any problems with the rear end being too far back? I have a A-7085-B and unable to locate a A-7085-E.

Thanks

It was kind of hard to get the rear spring in the cross member but I was just building a doodle bug so wasn't to worried about it. If I was doing something for the road I would make one using the print on Vince's site.

Its been a while since I looked at this but the Ford Green Book (seemingly published in the late 1940s) gave direction to service and for parts of the Ford Truck Line.

https://www.amazon.com/1928-1948-Gre.../dp/B00MMTALB0

Somewhere on the 'net (HAMB?) is a pdf of the Green Book.

I think most everyone here has covered what I learned in attempting to put a Warford Overdrive behind that Borg-Warner 4 speed 26K mile 1930 AA chassis. The adaptation of the 4 speed tranny to the automobile was similar, was done by Ford in the factory, and was not perfect - as in the 1" may have to be made up by "if it won't fit - force it!"

My Warford was not installed, but sold along with the rolling chassis/engine to a buyer from Texas.

I found this picture on Ebay. I would make something similar, looks fairly simple.
