Default Clip on '31 DeLuxe Roadster top irons

I'm replacing the top on my '31 Deluxe Roadster. Preparing to repaint the top irons I see a steel clip on both driver and passenger sides of the top irons.
What is the purpose of this clip.

Thanks

The steel clip is for holding the top bows and bottom bow together when folded down. There is a slot on the lower bow that that clip would go into to hold them together. I guess from flopping around.

THANKS! The clips had been turned and bent in different directions. It's obvious...now.
