1958 Ford Custom Tudor and Fordor Sedans
Did Ford Motor Company actually produce any plain 1958 Custom Tudor and Fordor Sedans, as illustrated in the original Sales Brochure? |

I never saw the trim shown in the brochure, and I was a very earnest observer of automobiles then. Google didn't produce any photos of that trim level, but there were several like this image.

Not sure why the brochure shows one type of trim and actual cars had another style. I would favor with the piture of the blue '58 Custom, and not so much the brochure since they came out before production started. Sal |

Illustration of the 1958 Fords based on the smaller 116" Wheelbase. In 1957 and 1958, Fords were built on two different Wheelbases, 116" and 118". The Customs and Station Wagons were on the 116" Wheelbase while the Fairlanes were based on the 118" Wheelbase. |

So 57 was the last year for the shorter wheelbase Custom 300 series? I did not know that, thought you could get the short wheel base 300 in 58 but doesn't look like it.

Re: 1958 Ford Custom Tudor and Fordor Sedans
5851a, the short 116" Wheelbase Custom 300 was available in 1958 also, a carry over from 1957. However, it appears that the "base" Custom model was deleted from the range very early on. That is why I asked the question were any "base" 1958 Ford Customs built?

Re: 1958 Ford Custom Tudor and Fordor Sedans
Illustration of the 1958 Ford Custom 300 Fordor Sedan & Tudor Sedan. I believe that these are the models with sales listed by scicala as "in '58 they built 36,272 Custom two door sedan, and 27,811 Custom four door sedans. Also built 4,062 Custom business sedans." I believe that these sales were the Custom 300 models, not the "base" Custom models? |

Re: 1958 Ford Custom Tudor and Fordor Sedans
The 58's must not have been popular in my area growing up. I remember seeing one or two, and as 40cpe said, I was also alert to the 'normal' cars in the small towns around me. I can't even remember the trim on the ones that I did see.

Re: 1958 Ford Custom Tudor and Fordor Sedans
'58s weren't as popular as '57s and earlier. I wasn't a fan of the grille and the oval tail lights. Also, 1958 had a pretty bad economic recession so I'm guessing sales were lower than previous years. They've grown on me over time and I prolly wouldn't pass up a good one at a decent price now.

Re: 1958 Ford Custom Tudor and Fordor Sedans
When I was a kid, the old man who lived across the street had a '58 Tudor Custom (300?) with the single spear. All the other '58 Custom series cars I ever saw had the double row with brass colored hammered metal between them.
Never saw the version with the abbreviated trim shown in the illustrations. There was another old man in town who drove his '58 Fairlane 500 fordor to work everyday till he died in the mid '80's. Two-tone blue and white (what was left of it). That poor thing was rusted to oblivion. He lived in a beautiful two-story Victorian house, but the commercial district grew around him and they couldn't wait for him to die off so they could bulldoze the house and tow his two old cars to the junkyard. |

Re: 1958 Ford Custom Tudor and Fordor Sedans
My friend looked for years for a business coupe and never found one. 50's cars in Iowa had short life spans though.

Re: 1958 Ford Custom Tudor and Fordor Sedans
Illustration of the 116" Wheelbase 1958 Fords - dated 12-57 Notice that both the Tudor and Fordor Sedans got the extra double strip and filler trim, but the Custom 300 Business Sedan didn't? Also notice that the two Ranch Wagons got the same side trim as the deleted Custom series originally had? |
