289 or 352 engine?
Hi fellow ford barner like I said before I'm not familer with fords how do you tell what kind of engine do I have in my 66 galaxie according to the Vin# 6U66Cxxxxxx I have a 289-2v Challenger V-8 in the car does the 2v mean 2 bbl carb or something else. any ways the carb on the engine I have is a 4bbl carb and there is a number 352 stamped on the front of the head on the drivers side of the engine. I always grew up around oldsmobiles and buicks and I always had 350's 4 bbl carbs in my older cars and it was labeled on the air cleaner. when I look under the hood I see a engine V-8 cause of the 8 spark plugs I don't know numbers like 289 or 352 please help a confuse guy I love cars for there lines and stunning beauty but really understood the mechanics of them I know simple maintenace and upkeep but never learned the indepth details thank you for any help.

Yes, 2V means two bbl. The V means venturi. The early big blocks, FE, had 352 cast into them, not on the heads.

Do you have a picture of your engine, might help shed some light on what you have. Almost anything could have been transplanted in the car in the last 46 years.

Pull a valve cover. If it's a small block Ford, 289, 302, it will have pedestal mounted rocker arms. A 352, 390 FE motor will have rocker shafts.

Re: 289 or 352 engine?
Pull a cover? Just count the bolts, a 352 will have five on a valve cover and the 289 will have six.

Re: 289 or 352 engine?
Even easier, if it looks like there is a lot of room on the sides of the engine, it's a 289 style V8. 289's were very narrow compared to a 352. If it fills the engine compartment from side to side, it's probably a 352 (FE V8).
A 289 almost looks out of place because it's so narrow compared to the FE V*'s (352 etc.). |

OK, if you don't want to enumerate as I suggested then pull a cover in the spring. Uh oh, I hope it doesn't have the 302 Cu. In. Nascar heads with the shaft mounted rockers! Somebody could have swapped them in.

Re: 289 or 352 engine?
The 352 and all FE engines have the intake manifold going up under the valve covers. Some of the valve cover bolts go into the intake.

Re: 289 or 352 engine?
Hi Fordors I'm going to try your advice first. but I plan on pulling the covers anyways the Ford has been sitting in a garage for 8 years and now in my moms yard for over a year I want to go and replace some of the gaskets with fresh ones and my brother looked down the oil filler hole and he said it looked all gunked up so we want to clean it up before trying to start for the first time that is one of the reasons I wanted to know what engoine I had so I could start buying parts and gaskets thank you all for the great advice I will try them all.

Re: 289 or 352 engine?
Just take a light and look at the numbers on the block by the starter .
Then write the numbers down and post them so we can tell you what it is . **If you have the top radiator hose coming straight out towards the radiator from the passenger side of the engine , then it's a small block . **If the intake is very wide and goes up under the valve cover , then it's a Fe . Problem with the Fe engines is they all look the same . So you could have a few different size engine . If you have a Fe I will bet it's a 352 . Hope that helps some . Jim |

Re: 289 or 352 engine?
If it has 352 on the left front of engine it is definately a FE. Either a 352 or a 390. They both had 352 on the front of engine. Hard to tell which one without pulling a head or looking at the rear of crankshaft flange but about everything is interchangeable on both engines.

Re: 289 or 352 engine?
my ford galaxie is sitting at my mothers house I called my brother to have him look under the car and he couldn't find the numbers anywhere near the starter so it will have to wait till spring to deal with it I'm not gonna unwrap the car it's not that important to find out right now. we had a few hard wind storms here and both times it ripped the car cover right off well we got it wrapped up tight and thats the way it is gonna stay but thank you all for your advice I will definitley use it all in the spring

Re: 289 or 352 engine?
One more thing to tell a small block from an Fe is the water pump. The Fe w/pump is bolted onto the block and not the timing cover, similar to how a how a Chevy V8 is. The small block w/pump is attached to the timing cover, similar to a Buick

Re: 289 or 352 engine?
An FE motor has a straight bypass hose, where the SBF has a curved bypass hose. An FE in a 66 would have the radiator tank that bolts on where the thermostat goes.

1964 was the last year for a radiator tank in a full size Ford with an FE engine.

Re: 289 or 352 engine?
Hi Pamlico yes I know the c means 289 but the vin also says there is a 2 bbl carb the engine sitting in my ford has a 4 bbl carb and there is a 352 number stamped in one of the heads that is on the drivers side that is what made me curious. I'm on a fixed income so I had planned on buying small parts for the engine during the winter so I had them available in the spring but don't want to buy anything without knowing for sure what engine I have. I can't do anything for now the car is wrapped up for the winter
