Shuddering And Hammering When Using 1st And Reverse
My original and unrestored 28 Tudor hammers and shudders when engaging the clutch at a standstill in 1st or reverse. I suspected an oil soaked clutch disc (not a muliti disc) due to a rear main leak but after pulling the engine and transmission that is not the case.
What should I be looking for? A bad input shaft bearing perhaps? Thank you in advance... |

Re: Shuddering And Hammering When Using 1st And Reverse
It may be clutch chatter caused by misalignment, oil/grease contamination, a warped flywheel, damaged clutch disk or a warped / damaged pressure plate.
It has been my experience that clutch chatter causes transmission oil to splatter into the bell housing and contaminate the clutch. Over-filling the transmission can cause this.

Re: Shuddering And Hammering When Using 1st And Reverse
Sure sounds like clutch chatter. It's usually a warped/heat checked flywheel or mis adjusted pressure plate fingers. A bad disk or unsprung disk can contribute to it.
Oil contamination will cause it, but, I've not found that to happen. I find this stuff easier to remove the transmission rather than the engine. Plus I can lay under there and take a nap. |

Does the surface on the flywheel where the pressure plate mounts get machined as well?

Re: Shuddering And Hammering When Using 1st And Reverse
Had a friend have the same symptoms a few years ago with a newly rebuilt clutch. Finally found that the new clutch disk had a slightly raised area on one face about the diameter of a nickel. Had to look hard to find it. Changed out the disk and all was well.

Re: Shuddering And Hammering When Using 1st And Reverse
It is commonly done to "surface" the flywheel/clutch surface, but not always necessary. Even "cracks" are tolerable provided the surface is not "scored" more than perhaps 0.005.
I would say wobble less than 0.002 you can ignore. I've now been through this three times - I have never had to address the friction surface. But I have been required to address a crankshaft flange issue. Joe K

Re: Shuddering And Hammering When Using 1st And Reverse
does it only happen when you are using the clutch— moving the pedal?
or does it happen after the foot is off the clutch and car is moving? |
