Wide 5 wheel question
I was wondering if all wide 5's are the same? I've seen them for the Zephyr and wonder if they were different.
Do all wide 5 hubcaps, centers & trims interchange? |

Re: Wide 5 wheel question
For Ford vehicles there are two different sizes:
one size for V-8 85hp and a smaller size for V-8 60hp. |

Re: Wide 5 wheel question
Yes, LZ and Ford used the same wheel, so the hubcaps do interchange.

Re: Wide 5 wheel question
Quote:
Speaking of width, V8-60 was 16x3-1/2", 85hp Ford and LZ used 16x4", and 3/4 ton pickups used either 16x5" or 16x5-1/2" The 3/4 ton wheels are not scalloped, so the accessory "spider" caps will not fit those wheels. Neal |

Re: Wide 5 wheel question
According to page 8-3 of the EFV-8 C/A 1937 Ford Book:
"The 60 horsepower model came equipped with 5.50 x 16 tires on 3.5 inch rims as standard equipment whereas the 85 horsepower model had 6.00 x 16 tires on 4.0 inch rims as standard equipment." Both wheel types use the same hubcap. |

Re: Wide 5 wheel question
Where did you get your info on width? I haven't seen a width listed anywhere, but would be interested to know if both widths were available.

Re: Wide 5 wheel question
I might be wrong on the width.
2.625" X 18". I'd probably have to look in the book to be sure. |

Re: Wide 5 wheel question
One thing I have always wondered about is that why did some rims have the center section spot welded to the outer rim and some have the center section riveted to the outer rim. Was this different suppliers or was it tied to years or something else?

maybe they were developing welding techniques ramping up in case of going to war. |

Re: Wide 5 wheel question
I would suspect that welding of the wheel centers in lieu of rivets was an economy measure that Ford or one of their wheel suppliers was toying with.
