Default Draft tube

53 Flathead..I am in the process of installing my draft tube after rebuild. It has been some time since I removed it, but I kept the clamps in place on the tubes. As I am installing the draft tube, it seems very close to the water pump pulley. I flipped the clamp over so the bolt is toward the center of the motor, but the tube still seems very close to the pulley. I can't see any way to change the position since it bolts to the timing cover. I assume that the clearance was always that close, and I just didn't notice it before. Am I on track here, or am I missing something? Thanks. I know the draft tube isn't ideal, but I won't be driving it that much anyway.

Now would be a good time to put in a PCV and do away with the road draft tube.

I found it best to install the road draft tube and it's related parts loosely on the engine and then make adjustments as needed so it all fits together without forcing anything. As long as it clears the pulley you are "good to go". Be sure to also install the little clamp on the lower tube that bolts to the oil pan. Don't over tighten and crush the tube. Hope these photos help.
This is an 8BA with 8RT truck pumps but the stock set up works fine also. If you need more photos let me know.

On a side note, how do you guys keep your engines so clean? Dang I'm jealous. Mine get sweaty after normal driving.

What is the best way to seat the draft tube into the intake manifold. I see mine has some dents in it already, so I assume it had to be tapped in at one time. Is there a special way to seat it, or should it just slide in? My tube is partially in, but should the bulge on the tube be up against the manifold?

Mine on the 52 Merc just pushes in with a little rocking motion. Seems like the clamp up front holds it firmly in place. My lower section of draft tube has gone missing during it's 30 year rest in the woods so I'm just running with the top section in place. I like the idea of a pcv system. Maybe some day.

That PCV kit look really ugly and out of place.
There must be a better way.
Do a search.

I just removed the PCV valve from my '53 Merc Flathead in my '51 F-1... It was starving vacuum from the windshield wiper motor... I'm going to reinstall the blow by aka road draft tube and see how things go...

that's ugly, drill and tap the underneath of the inlet manifold and use the pcv like the one in the below pic. the rubber hose from the pcv valve in the block connects to the fitting hanging loose under the manifold.
