1935-48 Flathead engine mounts.
I'm in the process on setting my motor into the chassis on my 1940 ford. I would like to hear from my fellow fordbarners the pros and cons on the after market engine mounts as I have heard stories they collapse due to the quality of the rubber. Or is there anyone selling NOS or have a quality one on the market.. I have posted up a couple of pictures of the Bob Drake version,,,is the Bob Drake version any good?? Thanks in advance.

Hell, I'm a skosh older than the newest (1948) factory insulators that you're talking about, and I also have parts of ME that are kind'a collapsing. Those engines are HEAVY, and the car bouncing all that weight up and down for gazillions of cycles on those insulators over the past 75 or 80 years IS gonna make the insulators flatten somewhat after that use, as well as figuring-in the natural degradation of the rubber over that length of time! I used the Carpenter version, as I recall, and have no issues with them. Any NOS rubber item will have long gained the pliability of a hockey puck - nicely matching the exact condition of the undesirable existing bit.

Carpenter mounts lasted Les than 10 years & 8,000 miles in my 36 from recommendations here on barn I have installed Bob Drake. They have metal band around outside The Carpenters I used back then did not.

I actually prefer the Drake mounts. Keep your old bolts though as I've found the new ones (supplied) are too short.

Since 1 year I use the older reproduction full rubber version from MAC's. And now the rubber looks like 50 years old and flat. The rubber quality is very bad. And I am angry because the shipping costs to Germany belonged 65 US$ for that 2 parts. [emoji34] I am very interested for the drake versions. |

Re: 1935-48 Flathead engine mounts.
I used Drake mount kits on my '46 Coupe, and like Kube, I had to use the original bolts, as the ones in the kit are too short. I installed the Drake mounts three years ago and +/- 7000 miles ago, and they are still good.

I would go with the Drake mounts. Drake's rubber products usually seem to work better for me than Carpenter's.

I used these on my 40 with the 8BA. Not sure who made them.
Are the rubber mounts for the 40 transmission the same as the engine mounts? Interchangeable? Last edited by 19Fordy; 05-05-2020 at 01:24 PM. |

Why don't you order more than 1 pair of rubber mounts. Offer the others to fellow enthusiasts for a fair price to offset your costs. They would probably be happy to buy from you, and only pay a little more so as to avoid the $ 65.00 shipping cost.

The problem is, here in Germany I have the only 1940 Fordor. And I know one with a convertible and one standard. That's all.

There are also poly ones if you don't care about looking original.

Re: 1935-48 Flathead engine mounts.
These same mountings were used on a lot of different cars, such as Auburn, Rover and even Land rovers, so you don't have to buy from Ford parts vendors. I found some new old stock ones from I think 1954/6 Rover 75/Landrover. Used them on my 35 Ford and on my 35 Auburns.
Try Napa stores and see if they stock them. Viv. |

Re: 1935-48 Flathead engine mounts.
Just make sure you get the mounts with the stainless band around them. That band helps keep the mounts from squishing out and going flat. Over the years I've built a bunch of 28-40 customer FH chassis and have used that style of cushion with no problems. Just ordered 12 pairs from So-Cal Pomona for use on the mounts for my 409 Chevy to FH water pump kits.

Re: 1935-48 Flathead engine mounts.
Is this why Drake offers bolts that are a 1/4" longer as a seperate item?
