grease seal
Want to install new grease seals in rear wheels. One seal has a black coating the other is red. Is one larger than the other? No, I do not have a very accurate micrometer. They came from Brattons and they are of course closed. Would like o install them tomorrow.
Thanks in advance, Sewall Tyler |

Re: grease seal
There was a time when these seals were ever so slightly too large, requiring a slight grind off the outer edge (that is painted) to fit. Brattons corrected that problem about 5 or 6 years ago. The red colored ones that have been around in the last 5 years or so fit OK. I can't tell you about the black one, but if they came at the same time and recently, I suspect it is fine. Trying to get it in without damaging it should tell you something. They should fit with a slight drag and need to be gently pressed (with a press) or carefully and evenly tapped in. Be sure not to get them cockeyed, as they will jam if you do. The key is to put them in evenly. If it fights you too much and seems to be too large, take a few thousandths off the edge. Not too much as you want a press fit to hold them from spinning.
