Please help me Re: Flathead Heads Mystery
Bought this flatty today. Seller said his dad ran it in a 40 Ford years ago hauling moonshine in Georgia. The 40 got wrecked but they saved the engine and stored it. It is suppose to be a 40 Ford engine but it has a 48 Ford dist. The bellhousing has 59 cast into it. I am mystified by the aluminum heads as I have never seen a pair like these before. The following is cast on the head: SCHRAGER AUTOMOTIVE ENGINEERING CO. LOS ANGELES S.A.E
FIRING ORDER 15486372 I would like to know more about these heads and the history of SCHRAGER AUTOMOTIVE ENGINEERING. Any knowledge you can share is much appreciated. Thanks. Last edited by 19Fordy; 06-10-2010 at 04:57 PM. |

Re: Please help me Re: Flathead Heads Mystery
I did a quick Google Search and other people are basically trying to also find out info.
The SAE stands for SCHRAGER AUTOMOTIVE ENGINEERING though...

That is a 1940 fan set up, but you probably know that judging by your user name. Jason...

Re: Please help me Re: Flathead Heads Mystery
At one time I rebuilt alott of heads including Fentons, but I can't remember anything out of the ordinary. Most heads have a shallow transfer area to increase CR. The Edmonds have a relocated spark plug, which will allow a power tip plug. I believe this to be beneficial with today's gas, leaner fuel mixtures and new ignition curves. While I'm at it I might as well put my foot in it. For a street application I don't think it makes much difference what cylinder head you use, Just keep it tight and watch the CR. For racing that's a different matter. The reap pros keep this to themselves and I've seen some real wild chambers, however the best commercial head I've seen id the Flatattack. unfortunately this has to be modified somewhat to take advantage fo it flow characteristics.

Re: Please help me Re: Flathead Heads Mystery
The heads are made from the patterns formerly used by Tommy Thickstun for his brand of heads. In between they were modified to make Tattersfield heads. The same history is true for the intakes.

I'm a flathead speed parts collecter and amatuer historian. People like Mark Dees have written speed parts history's published in the V8 times and Rod and Custom.
