Angry Leaking wheel cylinders!

Does anybody have a source for leaking wheel cylinders that are all coming out of CHINA. My two cars... 40 ford and model A converted to the 40 lockheed style brakes all leak after a period of time. This is so frustrating, i have tried all the tricks and tips to make these wheel cylinders work... shortening the tip of the shoe where it makes contact with the wheel cylinder piston so it wont push the cup past the miss drilled port and cause a leak to bench filling the wheel cylinder with brake fluid so the piston and cup wont go beyond the port feed hole. Am i wrong in saying that this is caused by china junk? Any help or source for good quality wheel cylinders will be greatly appreciated.

I have learned to take apart all new or rebuilt wheel cylinders, have found chips and metal grindings stuck in the rubbers, bleeder passaged drilled so 1/3 of the air would be trapped, and the above mentioned passage under the cup problem, on rebuilt ones brass sleeved by big name company after the first 2 leaked I took it apart myself, found that it was full of brass grindings from the honing process --- I don't know where to get "good" ones,---just keep sending defective ones back, try someplace different, or find old usa production ones for cores and have them sleeved

I solved the problem on the 39, and 46 I had by selling them, have the A, and a 36 because of the reliable mechanical brakes

I assume your not trying to use DOT 5 ..... stay with DOT 4 and flush more often.

Thank you to all who responded. Has anyone used the raybestos brand? If so was it made in the USA? What was your outcome? I think i may find some old ones and have them rebuilt with stainless sleeves and stop spending money on junk. Thanks again.

All the new wheel cylinders I have seen all look like they come from the same place, no matter if in Raybestos, NAPA, BrakeBest boxes, or generic bags from the Early Ford parts dealers.

We have had good luck milling the slot in the big piston .125" deeper on the front wheel cylinders. Backs have been OK as is.

Kinda sad they don't correct this. On the other hand, at least they still make them (yeh, I know).

In the past 6 years or so I have not been able to find any brake parts made in the USA. Name brand stuff all comes from China or Taiwan. I do think the name brand stuff has a little better quality control. I would think with the liability of manufacturing and selling brake parts that the name brands would be more strict with quality control

NOS with new rubber installed, or resleaving originals is the best way to go.

Who is re-sleeving or rebuilding original brake cylinders? I have a few saved back.

For sleeving hydraulic cylinders (wheel and master), check out:

Brake and Equipment Warehouse
455 Harrison Street NE
Minneapolis, MN 55413
Phone: 800‑233‑4053

http://brakeandequipment.com/

This company is one of four in the U.S. which use the Halray brake sleeving system which I believe was developed in Australia.

I had the above sleeve the original master cylinder when I restored my '67 Corvette. That was over 10 years ago with no problems. IIRC, the price was reasonable too. I think "White Post Restorations" out east does them as well.

Thanks to all who offered suggestions. I think i will find some good USA castings with the proper drilled holes and have them sleeved in stainless steel and install new rubber components. Anyone use Speed Bleeders on wheel cylinders, if so did you like them? Thank You.

I have "Speed-Bleeders" on all of my cars and I love them. They make bleeding brakes an easy one person job.

Thanks Tubman! I went online and found White Post Restorations. They say they won't sleeve cylinders if DOT5 fluid is used! It causes me to wonder why? Is there anyone near north central Virginia who's had cylinders rebuilt by them or knows of their reason for not sleeving cylinders intended for use with with DOT5 fluid?

Will they not sleeve them if DOT 5 HAS been used in them, or won't sleeve them if DOT 5 WILL be used?

Lifetime Warranty
We fully guarantee all parts that are sleeved and/or rebuilt by us, with the exception of those used in conjunction with silicone fluid (DOT 5).

If you are experiencing issues with brake parts that we have serviced, simply package them with a note of explanation and a copy of your invoice and return to us.

We will diagnose the problem, correct any issues, and return the parts to you.

If a problem is diagnosed, we will service the brake parts at our expense and pay return shipping costs back to you.

I suggest you give them a call and ask them their reason.
