I need to know too. I believe there is a company out there who makes a cable for this. Let me look through my notes.

.

The speedometer cable on a V8 Ford does NOT hook-up to the transmission. And the cable does NOT hook-up to a Model A trans, either. The cables on BOTH hook to a "turtle" which is mounted on the torque tube of each respective vehicle, as seen on this '35 Ford torque tube. DD

The "turtle" is a very simple affair which bolts directly onto the torque tube. It's gear meshes with the 'drive' gear which rotates with the drive shaft.

I read this question as the mismatch between the turtle drive and the female receiver on a Model A speedo.

Me too the A has sort of a key swedged on the end of the cable and a V8 has a square swadged on the en of the cable I used a V8 turtle.

I know someone told me about a speedo shop out west that can make this cable up for this situation. I'll dig around.

Here is one thread. I'll find the guy I was thinking of.

Correct cable for Oval speedo ('28-'30) to V8 turtle from Snyders.

Are not the "turtles all the same?? Just the gear is different, depending on banjo ratio.

The 'turtles' shown in #3 above are the same, '32-'34 four or V8 and beyond with varying gear ratios as you've noted.

The cable end that mates to the ‘28/early ‘30 speedo are different. The early A turtle has a matching female drive that can be swapped out to V8 style square drive

Until the OP confirms, the issue as I understand it is the cable end to Model A Speedo is not the same as a V8 and won’t work.

Bratton's Has the shaft for the turtle in either the keyed or square cable end.
I would think if you are trying to run an oval Model A speedo you could use
this part. https://www.brattons.com/catalogsearch/result/?q=23220

Don't know for sure but I'm guessing that Rusty at Speedometer Service in Colorado Springs could sort it out for you. Might be worth a phone call.

I was going on his reference to the "78 case 3speed" that the guy posted in his OP! Below, as some of us know, is a "78 case 3speed". DD

.

You know, this is why I get a bit 'uppity' (SOMETIMES) about folks that either "CAN'T", or "WON'T", but definitely DON'T use either proper grammar, punctuation, terminology, or at least a reasonably complete description while attempting to get some of us "dummies" to KNOW what they're asking about. Turns-out that this guy (as seen over on the A-bone forum) is using a '39 trans ("78" case) with an open drive adapter bolted on to the back of the case. For those not familiar with what these open drive adapters look like, see the transmission on RIGHT side in the pic below.

As you can see, the speedo cable hooks-up to these from the top, as there is no torque tube for a speedometer turtle to bolt to. Anyway, this guy's cable comes out and the loop is hitting the floor in his Model "A". Turns-out that he is looking for some form of a 90 degree adapter to get rid of the vertical loop in his speedo cable. Now, that wasn't so difficult.....WHEN explained somewhat reasonably to begin with!!! Rant over! DD
