Rear Axle Radius Rods
Do any of u fellow barn members have any pics or know of a publication that shows the various styles of rear axle radius rods used on our cars from '32-'48 ?
Blue print drawings with measurments would be cool too. I have the '35-'36 book and it gives a somewhat decent view of the design but no measurments. It would be helpful to some of us on here if we could compile this info in one location. Sort of like the article on the rear axle identification. |

Re: Rear Axle Radius Rods
January 2003 Street Rodder (Back when it was a worthwhile magazine) had an article outlining all the banjo rears from '32 to '48. I know I have a copy somewhere but I have really no idea where it is.

Re: Rear Axle Radius Rods
That's the article I mentioned in my first post.
It was written by Ron Ceridono with pics by Russ Young. It's a great article but doesn't show or describe a lot on the rear axle radius rods. |

Re: Rear Axle Radius Rods
You or someone in the Dearborn area might find that info at the Ford Research Center and/or in some of the other EFV-8 Club Restoration Books, from 32 to 48, might give some details on these different rear radius rods as well.

Re: Rear Axle Radius Rods
I've been to the museum and Greenfield village in Dearborn.
It's a must see. I never made it to the research center though. I'd probably still be there if I had. I hear that too is incredible. I was hoping to aquire some info from other members on here that may have the other year books or pics or. |

Re: Rear Axle Radius Rods
Of all I've read and looked up I feel the same as to not seeing a lot of info on these rear radius rods.
Figured to start here and see what we all could come up with. |

Re: Rear Axle Radius Rods
OK girls and boys......a quick-'n-dirty picture guide to "late '32" through '48 Ford rear radius rods as used on torque tube banjo rears.
The first pics are of radius rods found on the late 1932-'34 rears with the "scalloped" torque tube flange on the center section. They are STRAIGHT at the rear where they bolt-on, where-as the "early '32" radius rods (for the ROUND-flanged banjos) had a bend in their rear section. OK, 1935-'36.......these are easy to ID. The rear portion is a beautiful, heavy forging which is welded into the end of the steel-tube radius rods. The forged part bolts to tabs welded to the axle housings, and also serves as the spring mount on each side. These are cherished and valuable to traditional hot rodders (NICE ones can fetch $300). 1937-'40 radius rods have a forged rear portion which is welded into the longer, steel-tube portion which bolts to the forward torque tube. The forged rear portion bolts to the axle housing in a more-conventional manner than the '35-'36 versions. They are rather long, and project far forward on the torque tube. The following picture portrays this, as the long 1940 rod stands next to a much-shorter 1941-only radius rod, although their general construction is similar. 1941 Ford rear ends have many unique, one-year-only details. 1942-'48 are rather short also, and mount quite a bit farther back on the torque tube (as seen on this 1946 rear end) when compared with 1935-1940 radius rods. This may help answer some basic ID questions. DD |

Re: Rear Axle Radius Rods
Is there a particular year that you're interested in? If so, someone might be able to provide some general dimensions and detail photos. I have only a pair of '42 - '48's that I'd be happy to measure and photograph.

Re: Rear Axle Radius Rods
I'm not interested in any type in particular. I've been curious of the many styles to see a comparison.
What will go with what? Can they be be interchanged? Wider rear axle to what style radius rod, forging angles to length of rod.Year to type. |

Re: Rear Axle Radius Rods
I know I've seen some of the 32-34 bones up close and they look pretty flimsy. I wouldn't put them on a hot rod with any real power, afraid they would twist up.

Re: Rear Axle Radius Rods
They are not intended for any type of rotational torque application, the torque tube performs that function on a closed drive shaft. The rods are there to keep the rear axle square with the torque tube. When converted to an open driveshaft additional bar(s) are required to handle the rear axle rotational torque. With parallel springs the springs themselves perform this function for low performance applications. For high performance torque bars are also required.
