Hi Glenn,

Wheel lock sounds like a serious life-threatening problem while traveling on a highway.

Sounds like it could get worse with time rather than performing a differential self-repair over time.

Without seeing & experiencing exactly what is going on at your location, if mine, I would suggest to disassemble the differential to find the root cause of this problem.

Not what one wants to hear, but maybe consider thinking first about overall life safety.

If your wheel locks on the highway & you travel over the Rainbow, your family & all of us will surely miss you.

Mine did that, and it was a loose brake lining when I bought the car.
If you are positive it isn't a lining problem, then take the rear end apart as H.L. mentioned.

My A would do that,it turned out to be the emergency brake band had one of the little locating lugs broken off.

Hi Glenn,

Maybe try your "same" shoes on your "different" feet & "think" of it this way:

1. You receive a Model A transported to your shop, & the Model A owners concerns are exactly as written in your message no. 1.

2. You want a "correct" remedy & do it only "once"; & maybe the Model A owner may have missed reporting something you might find.

3. Then you think: Doctors can diagnose with MRI's & X-Rays; but you have none of this; so for a vintage diagnosis you next proceed to Step 1:

You jack up both rear wheels, remove both rear brake drums, & try everything possible to make the rear wheels "lock", like with engine not running, then turn axles by hand & with no drums. You notice that without brake drums, no emergency brake parts or no service brake parts can cause the wheels to lock.

4. If you cannot make the wheels "lock" in Step 1, maybe Step 2 is more work; but at least you have the peace of mind that brakes are most probably not the problem.

Hope this helps.

this is true, also most doctors go over with what they found with a team if they arent sure or "stumped". never hurts to get an extra pair of eyes looking of the brake parts.
