Default Large axle nuts

I'm replacing the rear axles in my 41. In my Tardell service and rebuilding guide, the book shows two sizes of castellated nut - regular and large

I'm know a regular nut is OK, but a larger nut has a certain appeal (my current axles has been reworked to a smaller 9/16 UNF nut and it just won't hold - bad threads).

What year/model are the larger nuts from?

I would contact Roy Nacewicz Parts, (734) 654-9450, fordbolts.com. He will know the answer and probably have them in stock. Based on his reputation if all he has is repros they will be the same strength as the originals.

I believe the large axle nuts are post war, so 46-48. They are getting harder to find.

I've found the large rear axle nuts on 42 to 47 1/2 ton pickups.

I have that information in my PC at the office but not there today. I recall that they both have the same internal thread size (which is obvious since they both fit the same axles) but the older version was smaller across the flats. I believe that they had the same height. I'll try to get back to this thread later.

I just rebuilt my 41 bango rear end, I ordered my gaskets, bearings and seals from Speedway and they sent me the larger 5/8-18 thread nuts. You could probably just get the nuts from them. Al

Almost all the nuts from the vendors are too soft. It is worthwhile to seek out good Ford used ones large or small. I would definitely test Speedway nuts with a file.

X-2 for Roy parts !
Roy , IMO, does not sell inferior/soft metal nuts. And, you can actually talk with him for any information regarding wants/needs. And, his parts are reasonably priced !

With your axles modified to 9/16 UNF, it would have been a major challenge to find any slotted nut in that size with appropriate strength to be safe. You are taking the correct path to get some new axles.
All the Ford axles/nuts are 5/8-18. The original Ford spec on the nuts is S-18 "case hardened". I doubt most/all aftermarket nuts meet this spec. New or used OEM Ford nuts would be best. Either the small 15/16" (32-38) or large 1 1/4" (39-48) nuts will work fine.

i would guess he doesn't keep the hardened nuts given his ebay advert for the kit. in the blurb it mentions hardened washers but not hardened nuts, just says original type nuts...
